Wildlife at Gartly Moor Forest

Insch and Huntly are the nearest towns or villages.

VIEW FROM THE CYCLE TRAIL IN GARTLY MOORThis forest has three cycle routes and a walk. The walk takes you up onto Wishach hill. The cycle routes mostly follow forest roads and give good views of the Bennachie ridge in the south and of farmland and the hills near Gartly in the north. The two mile walk up Wishach hill is an excellent opportunity to see old slate quarries.

Mammals: Squirrels and roe deer can be seen in early morning or at dusk.

Birds: In the woodland look out for birds such as blue tit, coal tit, great tit, siskins, greenfinch, goldcrests and long tail tits. If you are lucky on the open hill Green woodpeckers can occasionally be seen!

How to get there:
Take the minor road through Insch and past Dunnydeer hill. Follow the road for approximately 3 miles. Gartly Moor car park is on the left hand side.

What's of interest
Follow the white walk up onto the hill and look closely at the slates for different types of lichens. Cladonia species can be seen fruiting in between the slates.
