Wildlife at Clashindarroch Forest

This is the best snow-holding forests in the country ! There are specially laid out trails for cross-country ski-ers. Over the summer months you may use this area for walking or cycling but please be aware that the trails are set out with ski-ing in mind, rather than for other activities.
For ski hire and/or lessons you should contact the Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre on 01466 794428.
Mammals: Look out for red deer herds in the winter months, often seen near to the Cabrach car park. Roe deer can also be seen in the forest as well as Red squirrels. We have information about Red deer and Roe deer
Birds: Close to Cabrach car park, is open heath habitat which is an excellent habitat for ground nesting birds such as pipits and grouse. Look out for occassional short eared owls hunting during the day too.

How to get there: From Rhynie take the A941 road to Dufftown. The car park is on the left after about 5 miles.

What's of interest
This is a high forest and the weather can be extreme. Please remember to be prepared for bad weather and take clothing and equipment suitable for the conditions you may experience.
Close to Clashindarrioch forest is Darrioch Wids. Darrioch Wids is the name for 3 areas of land next to the forest that have been planted with native broadleaves.
