Wildlife at Back O'Bennachie Car Park

Oyne, Insch, and Chapel of Garioch are the nearest towns or villages.

Quarry used in past by crofting settlements, BennachieThis is an attractive car park set in a Scots pine wood. There is a large picnic and barbecue area on an open site beside the car park (groups should book the barbecue site in advance through the Forest District - contact details below).
From this car park, footpaths lead up to Oxen Craig and other summits on Bennachie. Woodland sculptures are set on, and beside, some of the walks.
Maps can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centres or The Bennachie Centre (see The Bennachie Centre Car Park for contact details).

Mammals: Look out for the occassional red squirrel or roe deer. We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer

Birds: In the woods look out for great tits, coal tits, blue tit,long tail tits, chaffinch, wood warblers, chiff chaff and many more.
Wrens can often be seen on the forest floor nesting in the piles of branches.
On the open hill look out for grouse, pipits, skylarks and buzzards.

Insects and reptiles: Some of our pools have palmate newts.

Habitats: On the hill there are acid flushes with plants such as bog ashopdel and sundew. Also look out for cloudberry and clumps of clubmoss. We have information about Pinewood

How to get there:
Follow the A96 north from Inverurie for approximately 10 miles. At the 'Oyne Fork', turn left onto the B9002 which signposted to Insch. After 3 miles on this road, and after passing Oyne village, turn left up to the Back O'Bennachie Car Park (sign posted Back O'Bennachie Car Park 1 mile).

One large BBQ site (RESERVED FOR LARGE GROUP USE ONLY) and 4 small BBQs which can be used anytime as long as used charcoal is put in the bin provided.
