Wildlife at Fetteresso Forest
Aberdeenshire
Scotland
Fettercairn, Laurencekirk, Auchenblae, Stonehaven, Banchory, and Strachan are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: NO 750 850
This huge forest has waymarked forest walks and trails and is very popular with people doing long sponsored walks and endurance horse rides. Three right-of-ways cross the forest, following the old Mounth roads.
Deer, foxes and raptors thrive within the forest, as well as the smaller birds and animals such as voles and tree-creepers.
Mammals: If you are lucky you may may see red deer as well as their smaller cousins the roe deer. Red squirrels thrive in this large, predominantly conifer forest, where grey squirrels have never been seen. We have information about Red squirrel, Red deer and Roe deer
Birds: The mixture between open moorland, felled areas, dense young conifers and mature standing timber mean that a wide range of birds make their home here. In particular, look out for buzzards circling high above the forest or perched on high branches, red grouse in the open moorland areas, and golden-crested wrens searching the forest canopy for insects.
Insects and reptiles: Safe under stones, toads and newts hibernate through the cold winter, waiting for the light and warmth of spring to bring them back to life. In spring they emerge to mate and lay eggs in the forest ponds, and by late summer tiny froglets are already able to leave the water. Habitats: This large forest includes upland heather moor, burn sides, old drove roads, and the remains of a few old houses and their gardens. Unlike some small woods there is no fragmentation, wildlife can easily move between one habitat and another. However we are still working to restructure the forest, to create even better conditions for wildlife.
How to Get There: Fetteresso is a large forest which lies between between the Slug Road and Fettercairn.

What to see now Red squirrels searching for cones.
Did you know Red squirrels do not hibernate - they just spend more time sleeping during the winter, to conserve heat and energy. They still need to eat most days.
