This mature wood has two waymarked walks, three car parks (one is only open in December)and a series of woodland sculptures. It has links to longer walks on Elrick and Brimmond Hills. The eastern side of the wood has superb mature Douglas firs, towering above the forest floor like cathedral pillars, shading a carpet of ferns and wood sorrel.
The paths in Tyrebagger are all waymarked as walks. Across the main road in Kirkhill we have waymarked cycle routes. Please respect our efforts to zone this small wood, and do not cycle or ride on these paths.
Mammals: Red squirrels are regularly seen in this wood. Roe deer are more shy and are usually seen when the wood is quieter, often at dawn and in the gloaming. We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer
Birds: The small forest birds forage for all available food. Coal tits regularly search the ground for food, while tiny goldcrests never come lower than the lowest branches. Blackbirds and thrushes will search vigorously through fallen leaves, and treecreepers move up the trunks, probing into cracks and fissures for invertebrates.
Habitats: In this wood are some magnificent tall Douglas firs. A combination of recent thinning and storm force winds blowing trees down has opened up clearings within the forest. We have planted some broadleaved trees in these clearings, and other trees will regenerate naturally.
How to get there: If driving on the A96, take the B979 turn off south between Blackburn roundabout and Dyce roundabout. The East and West car parks are approx. 250m and 400m along this road on the left, and the Christmas Tree car park, which is only open in December, is opposite the entrance to the West car park.
