Wildlife at Cannock Forest

FALLOW DEERMuch of Cannock Forest is situated on extensive deposits of freely draining gravel and sand. These deposits significantly contribute to the species of trees and other vegetation found by influencing soils type and availability of water. The main species of trees found include pine, larch, birch and oak with bracken, bramble and heather being abundant on the ground. The forest covers a wide area and conditions vary from flat through to rolling hills. The wide variety of habitats found in Cannock Forest support an equally diverse number of animals, birds and plants.

Mammals: Cannock Forest has a rich variety of mammals including three types of deer. The wide range of habitats provide rich food sources for many of Englands mammals including badger, fox, hare, stoat, weasel, hedgehog and more. We have information about Red deer, Fallow deer and Badger

Birds: The rich pine forests play host to a wide variety of birds including crossbills, siskins, goshhawks, goldcrest, long tailed tits and many more. The broadleafed areas provide homes for woodpeckers, nuthatches, whitethroats, jays and others. The nationaly rare heathland areas are ideal for the elusive nightjar, woodlarks, buzzards and a whole variety of others. Last years dawn chorus walk registered over fifty species of bird. Insects and reptiles: Cannock Forest is a haven for reptiles and amphibians including grass snakes, adders, newts, lizards and others. The purpose built lagoon pools and basking areas provide the ideal habitats for many ground dwelling species. We have information about Adder

Habitats: The variety of habitats found in the forest include open water, steams, marsh, heathland, pine forest, birch forest, oak and larch forests. The rare cannberry and cankthorn where both named after this area and are found in few others. We have information about Pinewood and Lowland heath

How to get there:
Cannock Chase is located between Stafford, Cannock and Rugeley. Cannock Forest is disected by several roads including the A460 and A513.
