Wildlife at Bucknells Wood Whittlewood Forest
Northamptonshire
England
Silverstone is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: SP 649448
Bucknells is a delightful ancient woodland. A pleasant mix of semi-natural broadleaf woodland and conifer plantations.
A small car park, picnic area and grassy play area is located at the south eastern edge of the wood.
Mammals: Here you will find the small muntjac and larger roe deer. Bucknell's Wood is also home to badgers and foxes; sometimes foxes use a discarded part of a badger sett in which to raise their cubs. As for the smaller mammals, we have dormice, woodmice, moles and voles here, but you'll be very lucky to spot one of these tiny creatures! Long-eared, pipistrelle and noctule bats all hunt through Bucknell's. We have information about Roe deer and Badger
Birds: The wood teems with traditional woodland birds, such as woodcock, turtle dove, barn and tawny owl, tree pipit and nuthatch. All three woodpeckers - that is greater and lesser spotted, and green - live here. You'll also find lapwing, siskin and long-tailed tit.
Insects and reptiles: Bucknell's Wood is home all the commoner woodland glade butterflies, but is also lucky enough to have the much rarer wood white, marbled white, grizzled skipper and brown argus butterflies living happily together here. You'll also find grass snakes and slow-worms, and every type native frog, toad and newt here. Habitats: The habitat is semi-natural ancient woodland, with a huge diversity of vegetation types, hence the large number of species of mammal, bird, butterfly and reptile. Bucknell's consists of mixed conifers, which are being heavily thinned in order to restore the woodland back to native broadleaved woodland.
How to get there: Bucknells Wood is located 1 mile to the north- west of Silverstone village, on the road to Abthorpe. The wood links to the public right of way network to give direct pedestrian and horse access from Silverstone.
