Fineshade Wood is an ancient mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland with waymarked walks, car park and Caravan Club site. The wood contains rich semi-natural native woodland, as well as areas of conifers that are gradually being restored to site-native broadleaf woodland under the 'Ancient Woodland Project'. The wood was coppiced for many centuries, and the remnant coppice banks can still be seen. The coppice was used in the past for charcoal making, and there is evidence of medieval and Roman iron smelting in the wood. Leaflets are available from the dispensers in the car park.
Mammals: Common shrew, pygmy shrew, bank vole, short-tailed vole, stoat and weasel make up the smaller mammals, together with 2 species of pipistrelle bat, brown long-eared and noctule bats. There are also muntjac and fallow deer. Badger, fox, hare, rabbit, otter, dormouse, wood mouse. We have information about Fallow deer, Badger and Otter
Birds: Naturally, the red kite, plus buzzard, sparrowhawk, kestrel, hobby, goshawk, tawny owl, long-eared owl, barn owl. Also nuthatch, long-tailed tit, marsh tit, willow tit, coal tit, blue tit, great tit, siskin, woodcock, redpoll,goldcrest,hawfinch occasionally, treecreeper, chiff chaff, willow warbler, grasshopper warbler, whitethroat, blackcap, garden warbler, crossbill, ....the list is endless! Insects and reptiles: Adder, grass snake, common lizard, slow worm, 3 species of newt, toad and frog make their homes here. As for butterflies, we get the rare purple hairstreak, white-letter hairstreak, green hairstreak, grizzled, dingy, large, small and Essex skippers. White admiral, common blue, brown argus. We have information about Adder Habitats: Semi-natural oak/ash/field maple ancient woodland. There are 9 ponds, large areas of ancient woodland restoration planting, and remaining areas of conifer, which include larch, pine, grand fir and Norway spruce. There is some alder carr by the stream.
How to get there: Fineshade is signposted from the A43, 9 miles northeast of Corby, and 6 miles southwest of Stamford.
