England
Cropton is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: SE 752908
Access to this area is informal. Enter the access road to the campsite and parking is available on the left hand side of the road a few yards into the wood.
Mammals: Roe deer are very common in this area. A couple of miles walk through the wood to the north brings you to an area frequented by red deer though these are very difficult to see. We have had records of pine marten ( a very rare member of the weasel and badger family) in this area so please report any unusual sightings to the contact below. We have information about Red deer, Roe deer and Badger
Birds: This is a good forest for watching nightjar and woodcock late on summer evenings but if you plan an evening stroll remember to take a map and torch and tell someone where you're going. We have information about Nightjar
Insects and reptiles: There are lots of adders and common lizard in this area but unless you're really quiet and observent you won't see them. The most likely time is early summer and just as the day is starting to warm up. The reptiles come out bask in the sun before hunting and are still not very active. Small pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies frequent the area north of Keldy Cabins. We have information about Adder
Habitats: Cropton is mostly pine and spruce forest although there is a lot of naturally growing birch and rowan. The clear-fells provide an artificial heathland that is wet in many places.
How to get there:
From Cropton village take the road signposted Rosedale. Look for the signs for the campsite on the right of the road about one and a quarter miles from Cropton.
