Lydford

(Average user rating4 unrated 4/5)

A beautiful woodland valley on the western edge of Dartmoor between Okehampton and Tavistock.

There are no waymarked routes, but a wander can take you through areas of mixed conifer, with vistas of the Lyd Valley, then down to the river and back. A look at the spectacular Lydford Gorge on the neighbouring National Trust land is a must.

How to get there:

Launceston, Tavistock, and Lydford Village are the nearest towns or villages.

Heading south on the A30 from Okehampton join the A386 at Sourton Down. Turn right off the A386 in to Lydford village. In the centre of the village turn right at the war memorial and continue along this road for approximately 1km before turning left on to the signposted forest track.

We've been going to Lydford woodlands for a few years now and for the first time, today, we saw deer. Recently there's been a lot of tree felling and it looks very different. We don't know if there's always been deer there or, because of the tree felling, we have a better opportunity to see them. Don't know what type of deer they were as they were moving quickly but it made the walk even better than usual.
