Chagford and Dartmoor are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: SX669839

First planted in 1921 this forest is a good example of a 'commercial forest' as it contains many of the main timber producing species grown in this country.
As with many of our forests, it is also a haven for wildlife, affording protection from the extremes of Dartmoor weather. From higher ground you will be able to enjoy the views across the moor and Fernworthy reservoir.
Mammals: Within the forest, roe deer and the larger red and fallow can sometimes be seen late in the day or first thing in the morning. We have information about Red deer, Roe deer and Fallow deer
Birds: Crossbills are usually seen and heard feeding in flocks on mature trees. From mid-May through to July you might hear the churring of a nightjar at dusk, particularly in young plantations. There are two bird hides on the adjacent South West Lakes Trust land, including one which is accessible by people of all abilities. We have information about Nightjar
How to get there:
From Chagford, follow the road signposted Fernworthy Reservoir. Ignore the first forest entrance sign stating 'Fernworthy Forest' and cross over the cattle grid. Carry on for a further 200 metres before turning right into the car park and picnic site.
