Land at South Burdon Farm was purchased by the Forestry Commission in Partnership with Tees Forest to establish a new community woodland on the edge of Darlington. The forest area is still being planted.
Mammals: Many small mammals such as voles and woodmice inhabit the old hedgerows and former railway embankments. The largest animal seen on the site is the roe deer. Although associated with woods roe deer frequent farmland if there are small copses, hedges or crops to hide in. We have information about Roe deer
Birds: Because South Burdon Wood, in character at least is 'farmland', birds associated with that land-use rather than woodland are seen. Both little owl and tawny owl frequent the area as do skylarks.
Insects and reptiles: Common butterflies use the area especially around the old pond north of the railway. We haven't seen any reptiles yet but common lizard is the most likely to be there. Please let us know if you see it.
How to get there:
On foot from the A66 along the old Stockton & Darlington Railway Track. Access to the area currently involves crossing the very busy A66.PLEASE TAKE CARE.
