ENJOY THE PEACE AND QUIET OF A WALK IN THE ENNERDALE VALLEYEnnerdale is a wild valley remote and isolated extending 7 miles from Bowness Knott inland to the summit of Great Gable. With an extensive network of public rights of way, forest roads, tracks and trails Ennerdale is a great place for walking and cycling. Alternatively park at Bowness Knott and a short ten minute walk will bring you to the clear waters of Ennerdale lake and views of Pillar and Steeple. The Forestry Commission is working with the National Trust and United Utilities in the "Wild Ennerdale" partnership with the a vision "to allow the evolution of Ennerdale as a wild valley for the benefit of people relying more on natural processes to shape its landscape and ecology" For more information check out the link to the partnership webpages.

Mammals: Roe deer can be seen especially at dawn and dusk if you are quiet enough. Red Squirrel do inhabit the valley and may be seen especially around Gillerthwaite. We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer

Birds: Ennerdale is home to numerous birds including Peregrine falcon, Raven, Buzzard, Kestral and Heron.

Habitats: Within the valley there are three Sites of Special Scientific Interest covering over 2400ha. These include important habitats for the quality of altitudinal succession, mosess and liverworts and upland oak woodland. How to get there:
Road Only:
From Cockermouth take the A5086 towards Egrement. At Lamplugh take the minor road to Ennerdale Brdieg. In Ennerdale Bridge turn left for Croasdale and "The lake" Follow the road untill it ends at Bowness Knott Car Park

The Ennerdale Valley is criss crossed by many paths and rights of way providing unrivalled opportuntities to explore the high mountains peaks of the western Lake District.

Enjoy 14 miles of forest roads with great views of Ennerdale Water, mountains like Pillar and Great Gable, the River Liza and Ennerdale Forest

The car park at Bowness Knott provides the best access point for horse riding as the forest road leading up the valley from the car park is a bridleway.
