Nightingale Wood

(Average user rating3 unrated 3/5)

Nightingale Wood in South Marston is a unique wildlife site. It is a new woodland and wetland area on an ex-agricultural site. The mixed trees here are still in the early stages of growth but already a new woodland can be seen to be emerging.

There are hard surface paths throughout with three waymarked walking trails on site.  Trim trail equipment was installed in 2009 with funding from the Great Western Community Forest project.

How to get there:

Swindon is the nearest town or village.

Via M4 junction 15, take the A419 towards Cirencester and follow signs to South Marston. Nightingale Hotel sign is located on the edge of this village and is signed from there. Accces is opposite the Hotel.

The low point was the Bird Hide if that's what you call it. Rubbish all over the floor, and hinges and handles missing off the wooden 'openings'. Dog poo everywhere is what happens when you allow dogs that aren't controlled on leads. Let's hope no birds decide to nest on the ground

I visited the site on a warm but windy day and saw plenty of butterflies. The variety of trees, the wetland area and the surfaced paths make Nightingale Wood a very attractive place. There is nothing wrong with the access road on the actual site.

Excellent facility if it wasn't for the terrible state of the entrance road, full of pot holes, and the dog poo left on the footpaths round the woods.
