General
Forestry Commission trails are being graded to illustrate the degree of difficulty and conditions underfoot which walkers should expect. Look out for these footprint symbols.

EASY ACCESS GRADING

Easy Access Easy Easy

Three Star - A smooth path with gentle slopes between 1:20 and 1:15

Easy Access Moderate Moderate Two Star - A reasonably smooth path with some slopes between 1:15 and 1:20
Easy Access Difficult Difficult One Star - A path with some rough patches and occasional short, fairly steep slopes between 1:15 and 1:8

CYCLE ROUTE GRADING

Cycling Easy Easy

Gradients - Shallow
Surface - Compacted surface 2-3 m wide
Suitable for - Occasional cyclists and families

Cycling Moderate Moderate Gradients - Moderate with some steep sections that may have to be walked
Surface - Compacted surface 2-3 m wide with up to 10% on rough tracks under 2m wide
Suitable for - Novice cyclists and families
 Cycling Difficult Difficult Gradients - Steep
Surface - Width below 1m wide with a range of surfaces including rough narrow tracks
Suitable for - Good cyclists with mountain bikes
Cycling Severe Severe Gradients - Steep with drop offs
Surface - Mostly on rough narrow tracks
Suitable for - Expert mountain bikers
