About Balkello

Balkello Community Woodland – The Gateway to the Sidlaw Hills

Balkello means the place of the monks in Gaelic, a clue to past residents.  You can find evidence of far older life here – plant fossils in the quarry are an amazing 400 million years old.

Balluderon Hill gives some great views to the coast and to the Cairngorms.  There’s lots of wildlife to see here, from ravens to roe deer, 130 species of flowering plants and 100 types of beetle that call Balkello home.

How to get there:

Balkello is in Tay Forest District.
Follow the B954 Muirhead to Newtyle road and turn off at Auchterhouse onto the unclassified road heading towards Tealing. Travel along this road for approximately 2.5 miles and the entrance to the car park and forest is on the left.
Kirkton of Auchterhouse is the nearest town or village.
