Caithness

Caithness has an interesting variety of forests offering good recreation and amazing views across the North sea coast and over some of the extensive peatlands that characterise this area.

Rumster is the oldest forest. Large areas have been felled, opening up great views over the coast giving the forest a much more varied and interesting structure. Two newly created routes offer the walker, cyclist or horse rider an opportunity to enjoy this lovely forest.

Toftgunn (or Camster) Forest on the Cairns of Camster road does not have quite so much variety, yet is a pleasant tranquil place with some of the best views over the North Sea.

Further up the road is Achairn Forest with a car parking area and picnic bench for a break before you explore further. The Achairn Burn is an especially beautiful spot and has a fantastic variety of wild flowers in the early summer.

At Halsary Forest we plan to install a car parking area soon to allow visitors to walk through the forest and enjoy views over the famous Shielton Peatlands.
