About Glen Nant National Nature Reserve

One of Scotland's National Nature Reserves (NNR), Glen Nant is a very special place, being a small remnant of the extensive native forests which once covered the Scottish Highlands.

The mixed woodlands are dominated by oak and birch but the more fertile, sheltered areas support ash, elm and hazel.

There are rich communities of birds, mammals, insects and plants dependent on this moist, sheltered environment.

You can find out about the history of Glen Nant and why it is so special by reading the reserve story in the right hand column.

How to get there:

Glen Nant National Nature Reserve is part of Fearnoch. Taynuilt 3 Miles and Oban 16 Miles are the nearest towns or villages.

Take the B845 from Taynuilt towards Kilchrenan.

After about three miles, turn right into the entrance to Glen Nant National Nature Reserve and over the small bridge to access the car park and walks through this wonderful example of Scotland's Atlantic oak woodlands.

Absolutely stunning nature reserve. I called in on my way to Oban for a couple of hours, and came back to spend the whole next day there. Most amazing lichens, ferns and mosses, fascinating wood ants, very diverse flowers, warblers, buzzards, ravens, even a goshawk overhead. Leaftet was excellent, and trail markers just right - enough to avoid getting lost, not so much as to clutter or detract from the landscape. Thanks!

Glen Nant's industrial history

The wood used to be a hive of activity day and night, with people busy tending charcoal hearths and ponies carrying the charcoal to the nearby Historic Scotland, Bonawe Iron Furnace.

As the most complete charcoal-fuelled ironworks in Britain, it is well worth a visit.
