Much of the estate, which was given to the nation in 1928 by Mr H G Younger, is now in woodland and managed by the Forestry Commission. However, 50 hectares (120 acres) serve as an out-station of The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
The west shore of Loch Eck offers a very fine long excursion on foot or by cycle from Benmore to Glenbranter through varied woodland. This route passes below the Paper Caves on the slopes of Clach Bheinn, where it is said the Campbells of Argyll hid their legal documents for safe-keeping during times of trouble.
There are three waymarked Forest Walks, Pucks Glen, Black Gates and Kilmun Aboretum.

How to get there:
Benmore is part of Argyll Forest Park. Dunoon is the nearest town or village.
There are two equally appealing approaches to the Forest Park from Glasgow.
Take the car ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, or take the A82 along the western shore of Loch Lomond through Tarbet, entering the park at Arrochar.
