About Dimmings Dale

At Dimmings Dale the Forestry Commission has turned an aristocrat's dream into a delight for everyone. Magnificent drives built by the Earl of Shrewsbury have been incorporated in the Valley walk. Visitors to this North Staffordshire beauty spot can now stroll where fine carriages once carried gentry on pleasure trips. The rolling hills and dramatic sandstone outcrops make a visit to this woodland a delight at any time of the year. The terrain is steep in some places but low level strolls around the magnificent pools are popular with many visitors. Some of the land is in private ownership and visitors are asked to respect this.

How to get there:

Alton is the nearest town or village.

All roads are clearly signed for Alton Towers situated just outside the Village of Alton. Dimmings Dale is situated between Alton and Alton towers, turn off the main road at the valley bottom and follow the river Churnet past the public houses and along the Red Road.

I stumbled on this walk having dropped my teenagers at 'you know where'; and I don't remember the last time I discovered such a wonderful place without planning it. It is just beautiful, and a credit to all those involved in it's upkeep!
