About Wharncliffe Woods

Wharncliffe Woods has a rich post industrial history with many quarry workings hidden within the woods.

Its steep terrain and many streams make it an ideal venue for both mountain biking and strenuous walking, without going to the Peak District.

There are two walking trails in the wood, marked yellow and red. These are over rough terrain and can be wet under foot. The woodland contains some very challenging terrain both to walk and ride upon.

Please ensure if you are riding off road that you match the terrain to experience and equipment you have.

How to get there:

Grenoside is the nearest town or village.

The wood can be access from the car park on the Woodhead road running northwards through Grenoside.

Amazing trails here. Been riding them today. Most riders don't use footpaths so don't 'churn them up' and slow down for horses Sparkles. Also, don't think I've ever seen a rider or walker leave a pile of poo on a bridleway. On the whole everyone gets along, you'd have to be extremely selfish to think everyone should behave exactly how you want them to.

with regards to sparkles comments, ohhh please we dont exactly churn it up as much as the horse riders do and we dont make the rule about how you pay for your riding permit so please dont vent your frustration out on us mountain bikers..............horse riders also need to be considerate to mountain bikers so the door swings both ways!
