About Phoenix Park, incorporating Thunscoe Community Woodland
The site is owned by The Land Trust and managed by the Forestry Commission
Phoenix Park is a hidden gem nestled between the towns of Thurnscoe and Goldthorpe in South Yorkshire.
What was once the slagheap for Hickleton main colliery has been transformed into a wonderful community woodland for all to enjoy.
The site can be enjoyed whether you are walking, cycling or horse riding. There are a number of features to view including a climbing wall, calved farmyard animals, a maze, and an art gallery designed by a local youth group.
The site is also home to an abundance of wildlife that thrives on the diversity of habitats that are present on site.
How to get there:
Thurnscoe is the nearest town or village.
From Barnsley
Follow the A635 from Barnsley.
As you approach a roundabout near Goldthorpe, you will see a large ‘Portwest’ factory ahead of you. Turn left at this roundabout onto Barrowfield Road.
Follow this road for approximately ½ mile, you will see a right hand turn to enter the Car Park.
From Doncaster
Follow the A635 from Doncaster signposted Barnsley. Continue along the A635 through Marr and Hickleton. As you approach a roundabout near Goldthorpe, you will see a large ‘Portwest’ factory on your right. Turn left at this roundabout onto Barrowfield Road.
Follow this road for approximately ½ mile, you will see a right hand turn to enter the Car Park.
