Wykeham Forest

About Wykeham Forest

An established forest, mainly of pine and other conifers. The forest is being used as a centre for research into 'Alternatives To Clearfell' forestry. This work investigates ways of maintaining a timber-producing woodland whilst at the same time maintaining tree-cover and bio-diversity. The forest also supports one of the Forestry Commission's tree nurserys where many of Britain's forest trees begin life. There are fine views from High Wood Brow and Raptor viewpoints of Troutsdale and the upper reaches of the River Derwent.

How to get there:

Wykeham is the nearest town or village.

By road. Approximately 6 miles west of Scarborough off the A170. Signed 'North Moor'.

how many pairs of goshawk breed/nest in wykeham forest and surrouinding areas (broxa,langdale cropton and dalby forests?). i know of one for definate that nests/breeds in wykeham forest but i am sure there are more.

This place is great for amphibians and reptiles. I found lots of common lizards, frogs and toads, a slow worm and an adder in just half an hour of being there :)

A hidden gem, in the shadow of it's more famous neighbour. Two spectacular viewpoints in Highwood and Raptor, and so much quieter than Dalby Forest. I will definatley be back.
