(Average user rating4 unrated 4/5)

About Colliers Wood

Over 30yrs ago this was an active coal mine with colossal spoil heaps bordering the local houses.

The 130 ha woodland has since been dramatically landscaped to create open spaces, wildflower meadows and great vistas across to Winter Hill, Astley Green and on a clear day the Welsh mountains. Explore over 5km of path networks that cris cross the site.

How to get there:

Higher Folds, Atherton, Astley Green, and Manchester are the nearest towns or villages.

By Road - From the A580 Manchester to Saint Helens turn off onto A572 to High Folds and then there are over a dozen formal entrances into Colliers wood, accessible from Gin Pit Village, Astley, Higher Folds and Tyldsley. There are regular buses to Higher Folds with entrances at the end of Coronation Drive(SD 684 010) and Sandringham Drive(SD 683 013)

It is excellent for running, walking, strolling, taking in fresh air etc. but now i hear there are plans to build a permanent site for travelling showmen, 7 units, a storage building, 14 caravans! bang goes our peace and quiet and lovely little bit of tranquility! lets hope the council kick out the planning permission!
