Allerthorpe Wood

(Average user rating5 unrated 4.7/5)

About Allerthorpe Wood

Allerthorpe is a small pinewood planted in the Vale of York. The area is very flat. It is popular with local walkers and wildlife experts (especially entomologists). It is not suitable for off-road cycling. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust lease part of the area as a nature reserve and the whole wood is being managed to ensure that this rare example of northern lowland heath maintains its biodiversity.

How to get there:

Pocklington is the nearest town or village.

Leave the A1709 York to Hull road at the cross roads at Barmby Moor about 2 miles west of Pocklington. Head south taking the road for Sutton on Derwent. The forest is approximately a mile along this road.

Lovely walk in the woods with my daughter, unfortunately got caught in the rain but met some very freindly people who let us shelter under their umberella!!

Regular dog and grandchildren walkers here. Wonderful birds and lizards and even a beautiful sunbathing adder last time. Lovely place.

We went on Boxing day 2010. Easy walking, good photo opportunities. Wondered if the slices of toast in trees were for the birds or something else?
