About Whitwell Woods
Whitwell Wood can be found in Derbyshire, close to the village of Whitwell. This predominantly broad-leaved woodland covers 171 hectares and is managed by the Forestry Commission on a long-term lease from the Welbeck estate.
The wood is influenced by the underlying magnesian limestone and has a very high nature conservation status. It is particularly notable for its range of flora, including over 20 species that are indicators of ancient woodland. In addition there are numerous features of archaeological interest. The Ginny Spring site of special scientific interest (SSSI) can also be found in the wood. It has been designated for its rich flora including some species rare in Derbyshire.
