About Maulden Wood

Maulden Wood is an attractive mix of semi-natural broadleaf woodland, acidic grassland and conifer plantations. The Greensand Ridge Trail leads visitors from the lay by on a tour through the wood. The grasslands in the centre of the wood are managed by the Greensands Trust in partnership with the Forestry Commission, and are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for the acidic grassland and heathland interest. The northern end of the wood is also an SSSI because of its importance as one of Bedfordshire's largest remnants of ancient woodland.

How to get there:

Maulden Wood is part of Ampthill Forest. Clophill is the nearest town or village.

Maulden Wood is accessed from the Deadman's Hill lay by on the A6 adjacent to the wood.

Take a healthy walk in the fresh air in this beautiful ancient woodland on the Greensand Ridge. Follow the Greensand Ridge Trail or find your own way through the network of rides and woodland tracks.

Cyclists are welcome on the surfaced gravel tracks. Mountain bikers are asked to use the specialist facilities at nearby Rowney Warren Wood.

Hi. I have just moved to maulden, after living in france for the last 8 years. and have a dog,who is french. and he loves the woods, and we visit maulden woods most days. yes i do get lost at time but it's all part of the fun. and anyway i was told years ago. that you never get lost. you just visit places that you have never been before.

I visited yesterday afternoon. The walk from the A6 layby (badly sign posted) to Maulden is beautiful but I must echo the previous comments about a lack of sign posts. I too got lost in Maulden Wood today. I go hiking in Switzerland in the summer where the paths are well marked and there are regular sign posts. The Commission would do well to follow the Swiss example and provide better sign posting. I had to use my iPhone GPS and the kindness of a rider and her family to find my way. I have never gotten lost like this in Switzerland. I shall be back but with a dedicated GPS next time once I have saved up for one! There should also be a large brown road sign (signifying a place to visit) along the A6 from both directions. I have lived 15 mins away for almost 40 years and had no idea that such a great wood was on my doorstep.

Maulden Woods is for informal recreation and does not have any waymarked trails, as there isn't sufficient funding available to install and maintain waymarked trails here. This is the reason we do not promote the wood via the brown tourist signs mentioned.

What's of interest

Harvesting work has ceased for the time being but there may be timber lorries on the forest roads.
