Explore Cannop Cycle Centre
(Average user rating: 5 unrated 4.5/5)

This centre, on the site of an old colliery, is the ideal place to start your cycling adventure.

Enjoy a gentle ride through the forest on the Family Cycle Trail or test your skills on one of our MTB or downhill trails.

On your bike!

Cannop Cycle Centre is the starting point for the Forest of Dean Family Cycle Trail which consists of eleven miles of waymarked, surfaced tracks.

Two singletrack trails have been designed for cyclists looking for a more adventurous ride. The 3 mile red grade (difficult) Freeminer Trail and the 7 mile blue grade (moderate) Verderers' Trail.

From Monday 9th March 2015 until Friday 27th March, there will be a diversion in place on the Verderers' Trail providing both blue grade and red grade options.   Major repairs are being carried out on the final sections which will be closed to riders.  Please observe the signage and follow the diversions.

For experienced riders only, there are a number of 'downhill' trails and an uplift service available, Flyupdownhill, for transport to the top of the slopes.

For the safety of walkers and wildlife, please keep all off-road mountain biking to the Sallowvallets MTB area behind the Cycle Centre.  In the wider forest, you can explore using hard surfaced tracks, but please do not ride off-road or on waymarked walking trails.

On Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th March, Chain Reaction Cycles will be holding a demo day at the Cannop Cycle Centre.  This event is being run with the support of the staff at Pedalabikeway.

The Cycle Centre will be busier than normal so arrive early to ensure a parking space.

To take part in the demo day, online pre registration is required and capped at 125 riders per am or pm session on each day.  Bike suppliers have trained mechanics who will set up each bike for each rider.  suppiers are Cube, Nukeproof, Vitus and Ghost.

As well as hiring bikes, Pedalabikeaway also offers refreshments, toilets and a bike workshop. Contact Pedalabikeaway on 01594 860065 for further details.

1 South West off-road cycling project

Recent trail and car park improvements have been developed in partnership with the 1 South West off road cycling project. 1 South West aims to create an off-road cycling region and provide information allowing people to enjoy adventurous off-road cycing and progress their riding with confidence.

Cycle Events

A number of cycle events are held on site each year. Parking may be limited on these days.  Other events such as the Wyedean Car Rally (February) and Half Marathon (March) will affect the trails.

The Verderers trail is ok, but not much fun. It is well maintained and signposted, but has only one downhill. The rest of the trail is short climbs and short descents that you can't really get into. Compared to the trails in South Wales, this was disappointing.

The skills sections by the road bridge and by the end/start of the more technical trails are great practice, especially for the children

What a great day. This was a smashing place to really get moving without fear of traffic. We did the family trail and found it the perfect amount of challenge.

It was a lovely sunny day so the car park was busy, but once we got on the trail we hardly saw anyone. Simply brilliant - a great day out and free except for car park. In my book that's good value as it usually costs lots to take children to special places. Loved the low tech atmosphere round the visitor centre, picnic tables, good loos and great coffee.

Massive ten out of ten
