Pont Melin-fach

About Pont Melin-fach

Picnics, woods and waterfalls

This picnic site is an ideal starting point for exploring the woodlands and waterfalls of the Nedd Fechan valley. The Elidir Trail (3 miles) starts from this car park heading downstream, finishing at the village of Pontneddfechan. Get someone to drop you off at this car park to avoid retracing your steps. The first waterfall you come to is Sgwd y Ddwli. You can also visit Sgwd Gwladus on a short detour midway through this walk.

This is a very important area for wildlife. Over 600 different plants have been found here, including outstanding collections of mosses, ferns and lichens. Keep a look out for the dipper bird (a small dark bird with a white breast that walks underwater).

Take care in waterside areas as the rivers can be dangerous. Water is often cold deep and fast flowing. The ground near waterfalls is also steep rough and slippery. Keep to footpaths to prevent unnecessary erosion.

How to get there:

Pont Melin-fach is in Waterfalls which is part of Brecon Beacons National Park Forests.
Take the B4242 form Glynneath to Pontneddfechan. Turn left onto road towards Ysradfellte for 2km and then turn left, following this road for a further 1 km to get to the Car Park
Pontneddfechan is the nearest town or village.
