About Hiraethog Forest
Situated south west of Ruthin, Hiraethog forest extends to over 6000 hectares (15000 acres). This is a productive working forest but with plenty of space for activities and quiet enjoyment. Species include a mix of Norway spruce, pines and larches.
Mynydd Hiraethog, which Hiraethog Forest is part of, translates as "the hills of great longing". It is an extensive upland area with a broad rolling landscape. It is very quiet and as a result is home to one of Wales's remaining populations of red squirrel and a key area for the increasingly rare black grouse. We look after areas of the forest to help these species.
Many miles of very quiet forest roads, numerous car parks and waymarked walks make the forests ideal locations for family cycling, walking and horse riding.
The Alwen Forest, Llyn Brenig and Clocaenog Forest all lie within Hiraethog Forest.
