Achany

This is a mixed conifer forest with numerous small glades and pockets of old alder and birch coppice. Beautiful mosses and plants such as wood sorrel carpet the glades. All the walks start from the Falls of Shin visitor centre. The newest route: the ‘Riverside Walk’ runs through the forest before following the River Shin back to the salmon leap viewpoint spur. This walk passes through mixed broadleaf native woodland that was once characteristic of much of Sutherland. To the west of the centre are two loops walks – the shorter one is an easy going countryside for all standard router that passes a lovely viewpoint looking down the River Shine, the longer loop heads deeper into the mixed forest of pine, spruce and beech.

How to get there:

Achany is part of Sutherland. Lairg is the nearest town or village.

From Lairg take the A839 west, half a mile out of the village turn left and follow signs for Shin Falls.
