Balmacara

Colour rating today: turned golden turned golden
Balmacara Forest is a mix of planted conifers and patches of native birchwoods and oakwoods on the slopes and hills above Lochalsh. The upper reaches of the forest have unrivalled views of Lochalsh, Kylerhea and across to Skye. (See Kinloch for details.)
There are two circular, waymarked walks in the forest, both can be accessed through Balmacara Campsite. The blue walk is 3.3km, the red is 5.2km in length. Both walks enjoy outstanding views of the coast.
Colours will soon be changing and the first hints of russet and gold will be showing through the summer green.

How to get there:

Balmacara, Reraig, Kirkton, Kyle Of Lochalsh, Dornie, and Inverinate are the nearest towns or villages.

Balmacara forest is 5 miles east of Kyle of Lochalsh on the slopes above Reraig.
From the A87, take the unclassified road to Balmacara Square. At the T junction, turn right onto another unclassified road which is adjacent to the forest.
There is a twice daily bus service between Inverness and Skye which stops at the main villages along the A87.
