Glen Duror

This forest has a magnificent setting, tucked in below the towering Beinn a' Bheithir. Visitors can explore the glen on foot or by bicycle and discover the Glen's historical connections. Follow the yellow waymarkers from the car park for the 4 mile walk through the glen or visit the mountain bothy, the birth place of 'James of the Glen' (see 'What's of Interest' on the right for more information) by following the Appin Cross waymarkers.

PLEASE NOTE that there are ongoing harvesting and forest road maintenance operations in the area. The southern part of the yellow '4 Mile Walk' between Acharn and the River Duror footbridge will be closed from Tuesday 13th November 2007 until further notice. The rest of the yellow walk and the whole of the blue 'Bothy Walk' remain open. Please observe ALL warning signs and be aware of commercial traffic using the forest road network.

What's of interest
You can download the 2008 Argyll events guide (PDF 2.2Mb).

Why not visit Leitir Mhor, the site of the notorious Appin Murder that took place 250 years ago. Here, Colin Campbell of Glenure who was working as an agent for the Hanoverian government of the day was shot by an unknown assassin. The authorities suspected a local Jacobite of the crime and James Stewart (James of the Glen) was later tried by a jury of twelve Campbells and hung for the crime. He protested his innocence whilst the likely real suspect, Allan Breck, fled to France. Take a step back in time and enjoy your picnic with fantastic views across Loch Linnhe.
