Appin Murder Cairn

The car park with picnic area at the top of the hill gives convenient access to the site of the notorious Appin Murder that took place 250 years ago. Here, Colin Campbell of Glenure who was working as an agent for the Hanoverian government of the day was shot by an unknown assassin. The authorities suspected a local Jacobite of the crime and James Stewart (James of the Glen) was later tried by a jury of twelve Campbells and hung for the crime. He protested his innocence whilst the likely real suspect, Allan Breck, fled to France. Take a step back in time and enjoy your picnic with fantastic views across Loch Linnhe.

How to get there:

Appin Murder Cairn is in Allan Breck which is part of Glencoe. Ballachulish is the nearest town or village.

From Fort William and Ballachulish, take the A828 West from the Ballachulish Bridge (signposted Oban) for about 2 miles until you see a sign for Leitir Mhor. Turn left onto the forest road for the car park and access to the Appin Murder Cairn. From Kentallen and Duror turn right where you see the sign just after a row of houses on your right.
