About Appin Murder Cairn

The car park with picnic area at the top of the hill gives convenient access to the site of the notorious Appin Murder that took place 250 years ago.

Here, Colin Campbell of Glenure who was working as an agent for the Hanoverian government of the day was shot by an unknown assassin. The authorities suspected a local Jacobite of the crime and James Stewart (James of the Glen) was later tried by a jury of twelve Campbells and hung for the crime. He protested his innocence whilst the likely real suspect, Allan Breck, fled to France.

Take a step back in time and enjoy your picnic with fantastic views across Loch Linnhe.

There are harvesting operations ongoing in this area. Please obay any signs.
