About Twechar

Twechar wood rises above the Forth and Clyde canal and covers Bar Hill. It contains a diverse mix of conifers including larch, spruce, pine and areas of native broadleaved woodland.

The most notable feature of the wood is the archaeological remains of the Antonine wall, military road and Roman fort. Famous archaeological excavations unearthed the fort, pottery, tiles, stone sculptures, coins, metal tools and weapons.

The site is cared for by Historic Scotland and can be visited by a public footpath.
