Forest of Ae

About Forest of Ae

Ae valley car park will be closed until Friday the 24th of May to allow us to carry out essential road repairs.

Please note the main cafe at Ae is now closed.

The name Ae can be found in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest place name in Britain.

The forest, however is one of the largest in Britain, at over 10,000 hectares.

Large quantities of timber are harvested every year for use in our everyday lives, from paper to house building. As a sustainable grower, Forestry Commission Scotland also plants new trees to supply future generations.

How to get there:

Forest of Ae is part of Forests of the Southern Uplands. Ae, Dumfries, Moffat, and Thornhill are the nearest towns or villages.

Follow the A701 from Dumfries or Moffat. Turn just south of Parkgate, at the signpost for Forest of Ae, and follow this road for two miles. At the crossroads in Ae Village, turn right and follow signs for the cycle car park.

Alternately, keep straight on for another half a mile and take the signposted turning for 'Ae Valley car park' where all the forest walks start.

My 13 year old son was due to take part in the downhill mountain bike race at Ae forest this sunday - overnight his bike was stolen - he delivered papers for a year and a half to save up for his bike and is devestated his bike has been taken. It could be miles away by now but there is a chance it was taken and abandoned in the area. Please keep a look out and contact the local police if found. Thanks

Fantastic views throughout the red route, well signposted, some of the tracks are a bit rough and loose but makes it more fun!!
