About Tarbet

Arrochar, historically the heart of the country of the Clan MacFarlane, nestles along the eastern shore of the head of Loch Long, where glaciers have cut a great gap through the hills from Loch Lomond. Its twin settlement on Loch Lomond is Tarbet, the name meaning a portage, or literally ‘drag-boat’.

The woodland consists of Scots pine, mixed conifer and broadleaves, the low area is now predominately an oak wood.

The Tarbet Isle Loop walk runs parallel to one of Caulfield's military roads, which runs from Tarbet to Crianlarich. The road is visible adjacent to the western loop of the walk, behind the drystane dyke.

How to get there:

Tarbet is part of Argyll Forest Park. Arrochar is the nearest town or village.

From Glasgow follow the A82 along the western shore of Loch Lomond to Tarbet.

From the north follow the A82 from Crianlarach.
