About Glen Croe
In early days visitors held the passage of Glen Croe in much the same kind of awe as that of Glen Coe.
In 1799, Sarah Murray, a bold English traveller, thought it was 'one of the most formidable, as well as most gloomy passes in the Highlands, amongst such black, bare, craggy, tremendous mountains, as must shake the nerves of every timorous person'.
However, the easy gradients of the new road, have taken any remaining terror out of the glen.
How to get there:
Glen Croe is part of Argyll Forest Park. Arrochar is the nearest town or village.
By road from Glasgow, follow the A82 along Loch Lomondside. Then follow the A83, running up Glen Croe, to the Rest & Be Thankful car park.
The road crosses and re-crosses the River Croe, climbing steadily up the valley flank to its head on the pass of the Rest and Be Thankful.
