Explore Dimmings Dale
(Average user rating: 5 unrated 4.4/5)

At Dimmings Dale the Forestry Commission has turned an aristocrat's dream into a delight for everyone. Magnificent drives built by the Earl of Shrewsbury have been incorporated in the Valley walk. Visitors to this North Staffordshire beauty spot can now stroll where fine carriages once carried gentry on pleasure trips. The rolling hills and dramatic sandstone outcrops make a visit to this woodland a delight at any time of the year. The terrain is steep in some places but low level strolls around the magnificent pools are popular with many visitors. Some of the land is in private ownership and visitors are asked to respect this.

The Ramblers Retreat offers a wide range of refreshments in a relaxed licensed restaurant. The spacious car park, permissive way marked walk and beautiful surroundings make this a popular destination for walkers.

Visited for our usual walk from Oakamoor to Ramblers retreat, then over to the YHA youth hostel & down the the ponds. We had seen forestry warning signs of work in progress but was not prepared for the forestry track bisecting the footpath! it was an oozing river of mud, a road width wide and over the tops of our boots deep. We had found it too far to retrace our steps and was forced to cross this quagmire! The forestry people had made no attempt to restore right of way of the footpath. Come on Forestry you can do better for the visiting public who travel good distances to enjoy this valley, there was plenty of logs cut which could have bridged this mess.

I am a frequent walker at Dimmingsdale and today I took my usual walk from Ramblers Retreat up to the Youth Hostel then down to the pools. There I came upon the signs for chemical spraying and part way down the track a barrier, which meant I had to paddle through the stream to continue back down to Ramblers Retreat. I would like to know which chemicals you are spraying and whether these make the pools unsafe please? I would also like to know when the spraying and felling of trees will stop.
