Kiveton Community Woodland
Colour rating today: turning golden
Even as the bright colours of the summer flowers on the conservation grassland fade and the Autumnal hues of brown, red and gold slowly replace the green of the broadleaf trees on site, life at Kiveton Community Woodland goes on. Autumn is a time of preparing for the Winter months ahead. Birds and animals fatten up on the ripened fruits and nuts, flowers and plants set seed before the first frosts have a chance to damage them, and human visitors to the site wear more clothing as protection against the cooling temperatures. You can still enjoy panoramic views of the eastern edge of the Peak District from the rocks at the top of the site, and the occassional bird-call can still be heard above the low murmur of the M1 motorway. As you walk, or cycle, around the site you should notice that the ponds are attracting more waterfowl, and the butterflies and dragonflies that have graced our grasslands during the summer become less active and disappear althogether. They've done their work and will be replaced by their off-spring next year.
