Mendip Woodlands

(Average user rating4 unrated 4/5)

About Mendip Woodlands

This area contains three relatively small woods set high on the Mendip Hills. They are predominantly coniferous, dating from the post war years and they form islands in what is an open, exposed landscape.

East Harptree has a short surfaced trail leading to the Smitham Chimney and also has fine views nearby of the Chew Valley. Stockhill is a popular spot for walkers and has its own circular easy access path. A third wood, Rowberrow, is leased by the Commission and is a conifer woodland set on a hillside.

How to get there:

Cheddar & Wells is the nearest town or village.

Follow the B3135 from Cheddar onto the Mendip Hills. The woodlands lie either side of this road.

Up on Beacon Batch the views are spectacular over the Blagdon and Chew Valley lakes. The Limestone link is also a great track for walkers and mountain bikes. Roberrow is also good for bikes but recent forestry works destroyed most of the trails. Most have been rebuilt though. I would like to see more bike tracks in the woods and another track like the limestone link. The Mendips has great potential to become a biking destination!
