Lynford Arboretum and Lakes

Formerly part of Lynford Hall estate, this area still retains features which reflect its "parkland" origins. The present hall, built in 1858, has a chequered history. It has served as a military hospital, forester training school ( 1947 - 1957 ) and is currently a hotel and conference centre. In the late 1940's, trainee foresters started planting trees which formed the basis of the Arboretum, there are now over 200 tree species, with future plans to increase the collection. ................................................A group of volunteers drawn from Friends of Thetford Forest Park is now working with the Forestry Commission on the care of the Arboretum. As a result of this the Arboretum is looking loved and cared for. Trees and shrubs are being pruned, paths are kept clear and tidy and new planting is taking place. Earlier this year a group of Wych Hazels were planted that we are all looking forward to seeing in flower in the early spring. Link onto the Friends web site (to the right of this page) for more information about the work of the group and how to join them..................................................... Footpaths within the Arboretum are suitable for wheelchair users. Sorry, but dogs and barbeques are not permitted........................................................This is one of a number of forest sites participating in a pay be phone trial. The cost is £1 per visit. For more details follow the link to Paying by Phone.
