Ennerdale

Ennerdale Valley is a remote wild valley on the north western edge of the Lake District National Park. Ennerdale valley offers magnificent wild scenery with a wide range of walking and cycling opportunities. From the car park at Bowness Knott the valley stretches 7 miles east with mountains on either side rise to nearly 3000ft asl.

Wild Ennerdale

The Forestry Commission is working in partnership with United Utilities and The National Trust through the Wild Ennerdale Partnership with a vision to"allow the evolution of Ennerdale as a wild valley for the benefit of people relying more on natural processes to shape its landscape and ecology"

How to get there:

Ennerdale Village is the nearest town or village.

Parking. The valley is served by two free car parks (see map overleaf). If you are biking or horse riding please use Bowness Knott car park. Please note there is no public vehicle access permitted beyond Bowness Knott Car Park unless you are staying overnight at Ennerdale YHA or Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre.

Public transport. Ennerdale is a remote location with no direct access to public transport. Nearest rail links are Whitehaven (7½ miles ) and Penrith (40 miles ) which both have bus links. Nearest bus stops are Lamplugh (4½ miles to Bowness Knott) and Rowrah (4 miles to Bleach Green) . Alternatively enjoy a high level walk into the valley from Honistor (2½ miles to Blacksail ) or Buttermere (2 miles to Blacksail ) using the Honistor Rambler. Visit

I went on a college trip there and what they are acheiving with there ccf was interesting and what they've done with the wood is great and the views are stunning. Will be back at some point.

Myself and my friend Rose visit Ennerdale regularly and we love it. There is always something different to see and discover. We especially like to look out for the Galloway cows.

i have walked them many times and am now to ill to see them anymore. but in my mind and thoughts they will always be.

Walking
The Ennerdale Valley is criss crossed by many paths and rights of way providing unrivalled opportuntities to explore the high mountains peaks of the western Lake District.
Cycling
Enjoy 14 miles of forest roads with great views of Ennerdale Water, mountains like Pillar and Great Gable, the River Liza and Ennerdale Forest

The car park at Bowness Knott provides the best access point for horse riding as the forest road leading up the valley from the car park is a bridleway.
