West Tanpit Wood

(Average user rating4 unrated 4/5)

West Tanpit Wood is a small, quiet woodland located on the banks of picturesque Markham Brook. There is a short circular walk within the wood which passes through a mixture of trees including oak, hazel and larch. West Tanpit Wood is probably named so because of the brook having been previously used for leather tanning. Oak was used to line tan pits into which brook water was fed, the oak bark leeched out tannins causing the animal hides to soften and become more durable.

How to get there:

West Tanpit Wood is in Bristol Woodlands.
From the M5 take junction 19 and follow the A369 towards Bristol. Just west of Abbots Leigh turn down Sandy Lane and continue for 1 mile to reach a small car parking area at the woodland entrance.
Abbots Leigh is the nearest town or village.

Beautiful, magical wood at all times of year, although the walk is quite short.
