Glenmore Forest Park

(Average user rating5 unrated 5/5)

About Glenmore Forest Park

This woodland was the second Forest Park created by the Forestry Commission back in 1948, and remains its most northerly.

Glenmore holds one of the few remaining pockets of ancient Caledonian Pinewood in Scotland. Major work is underway to preserve and expand this important habitat for future generations.

Glenmore Forest Park Campsite is also now open. Telephone 01479 861271.

Glenmore Forest was bought by the Forestry Commission in 1923, only four years after the Forestry Commission was created. It extends to some 3,500 hectares (8,600 acres) - half of this area is woodland and half open hill.

Cradled in the middle of the forest is beautiful Loch Morlich with its long sandy beach. The park attracts over 250,000 visitors each year, who come here to sample the wide range of outdoor activities on offer or simply to relax in the seclusion and grandeur of the native pinewood. Loch Morlich has been awarded a Rural Beach Award by Keep Scotland Beautiful. This award is based on continiuing "excellent" water quality of Loch Morlich. (Tested by SEPA). This is the first and only freshwater inland loch to have gained this award in Scotland.

How to get there:

Aviemore is the nearest town or village.

From Aviemore, head east towards the Cairngorm mountains and the ski area. Pass through Coylumbridge and, after six miles, enter Glenmore Forest Park.

The Forest Cafe is warm and welcoming. The staff are fantastic and the food is home made and a welcome change to other establishments mass produced junk....what a shame you are going to change all this. We have been visiting the cafe / shop for many years, and it is one of the reasons we stop off on our way up to the mountains. Change this and all you will do is give your valuable trade to someone else!
Also in these days of satelite navigation why isn't your post code easy to find on your web site?
Forestry Commission Response:
Jonathan, thank you for your comments regarding the Forest Cafe. Like every other business we are subject to change. The present tenant is retiring after 10 years of running the Cafe and as you rightly say has made a good job of it. The opportunity to run the business was advertised and successfully filled by a local couple who have run a similar operation locally.
We have every faith in them and hope that they continue to attract people like yourselves. It obviously will be a different operation as the whole cafe area is having to be upgraded due to it being fourteen years ago that we opened it . It does not come up to today's expectations nor standards. I hope that you will manage to visit it and approve of the different set up. Once again thank you for your comments as it is only with feedback that we can act on any concerns. Jim Gillies, Recreation manager
