Penrhys Trail

About Penrhys Trail

Start from the Rhyslyn car park. The path climbs steadily above Pontrhydyfen, overlooking the birthplace of the actor Richard Burton. The prominent aqueduct was built in 1825 to carry water across the valley to Oakwood Coal & Iron Works. Panoramic views from Port Talbot to Llandovery reveal foreground scenes of the old Tonmawr stone mines appearing in relief against hills of the upper Swansea valley and the distant Carmarthen Fans. Follow the ancient ridgeway track which connected Baglan Church to Craig y Llyn via the historical ruin of Gyfylchi Chapel from which the path descends through Pine & Larch woodlands to the Afan Valley floor below.

How to get there:

Penrhys Trail can be started from Rhyslyn in Afan Forest Park which is part of Afan Forest Park. Pontrhydyfen is the nearest town or village.

From the A4107, turn down the B4287 towards Pontrhydyfen. Take a sharp right turn just over the bridge as the road bears left.
