Holmesyke Reedbeds

About Holmesyke Reedbeds

Enjoy a walk around this short circuit. Surfaced paths take you round the reedbed area, which was built in 2004 by The Coal Authority.

There are interpretation panels to explain how the system of ponds work and why they are needed, plus benches to sit on and enjoy the surroundings.

Take in the young native woodland, walk through the colourful wildflower meadows and round the amazing reedbed. This is a lovely circuit which has become very popular with local people, whether jogging, cycling or on their powered wheelchairs.

There are some small residents in the reedbeds that you may see or hear on your visit.  Keep an eye out for Moorhens, Mallards and Reed Buntings, amongst other wildlife.

Accessibility

The Reedbeds Trail is featured on the Phototrails website:

The site provides accessibility information on a network of woodland paths and trails, allowing people to make informed choices about which sites to visit.

How to get there:

Holmesyke Reedbeds can be started from Holmesyke reedbeds in West Forth Woodland. Forth is the nearest town or village.

Leaving in a northerly direction from Forth Village, turn right at the crossroads with the B715 Climpy Road.

Follow Manse Road until a minor road (East Forth Road) heads downhill to the right, opposite the play park. After the bungalows you will see the parking layby on the right-hand side before the tall trees.

Park here and walk down the minor road about 300m to the path entrance beyond the burn and vehicle gate. Be careful of traffic using this minor road.

What's of interest

Award Winner
This wonderful reedbed scheme won a Saltire Award in October 2006. This was because the project has greatly improved the environment in the Moose (Mousewater).

2.5 tonnes of iron was removed from the water each month in summer 2006 and a beautiful variety of wildlife habitats have been created.

See The Coal Authority website for more information about minewater treatment schemes.
