Pine Tree Trail

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)

About Pine Tree Trail

This is the longest trail at Cambus O'May, and leads you through a fascinating range of habitats.

Begin by following the glaciated ridge with superb views of Deeside and Lochnager.

Skirt past the lochan formed by a glacial kettle-hole and continue through pine and birch woodland. Cross the old road which took granite from the quarry

The path then follows the power line with its ground flora of heather and juniper. After you've crossed the Queel Burn, the path becomes narrower and rougher as it passes through old pine woodland.

Then join the forest road which takes you through conifer woodland, before a sharp right turn leads back through birch wood towards the second lochan.

What to see

Watch out for roe deer here! Return to the car park on the old road.

How to get there:

Pine Tree Trail can be started from Cambus O' May in Forests of Moray and Aberdeenshire. Ballater, Aboyne, and Dinnet are the nearest towns or villages.

Cambus O'May Wood lies on the north side of the A93 between Ballater and Dinnet.

From Ballater, take the A93 east. The Cambus O'May car park is sign posted on your left roughly four km from the edge of Ballater. There is a bus stop at the forest entrance.

Wildlife

Mammals: We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer

Habitats: We have been working in Cambus recently to improve the habitat for capercaillie and to restore the woodland back to what it once was, by removing the Sitka Spruce and replacing it with more natural braodleaves.
You will notice areas of new planting especially near some of the wetter areas. Replacing the Sitka here with species like alder, aspen and birch puts nutrients back into the water. We have information about Pinewood
