Ryvoan Trail

(Average user rating4 unrated 4/5)

About Ryvoan Trail

A longish but very rewarding walk with difficult and narrow sections. The path starts behind the visitor centre and climbs up into the forest. A long level section along a forest road surrounded by planted Scots Pine gives way onto a narrow rocky path which meanders through a pristine area of natural Caledonian Pine, Birch and Juniper woodland.

The path then drops steeply down to "Lochan Uaine" - the Green Lochan. Return by the lower Ryvoan Pass trail, branching off left onto a path through the woods just before Glenmore Lodge.

Turn right when the river is reached and continue to the main road. Cross over, still following the river and return to the visitor centre along the lochside trail

Remember to wear strong hill-walking boots.

How to get there:

Ryvoan Trail can be started from Glenmore Forest Park Visitor Centre in Glenmore which is part of Glenmore Forest Park. Aviemore is the nearest town or village.

After you enter Glenmore Forest Park, Loch Morlich is on your right-hand side. Once at the east end of Loch Morlich, you pass a shop on the right before reaching the Glenmore Caravan and Camping site.

Directly opposite the entrance to the campsite is the access road into the Visitor Centre - lookout for the big green sign!

For Sat Nav users, the post code for the Visitor Centre is PH22 1QU.

A lovely walk, but very poorly signed at the start from the visitor centre. Fortunately the assistant at the centre had given us good directions, but had we not had those we would have been on the wrong path very early on, and going in the wrong direction. All that is needed is a couple of posts labelled with Ryvoan, c'mon FC, you can do it! After that the walk was a joy, initially on a hard forest road through Sitka spruce plantation, but climbing up into the Scots pine woods. At the top of the road the views are stunning, across to Cairngorm and down to the wooded valley below. From the top onwards the path is more steep and uneven, requiring good footware and a bit of sure-footedness. The path has been beautifully restored in many places, and drops down through granny pines to the road at the bottom, and the delightful and truly green lochan. A great flight of stone steps has been installed down to the lochside, and a new viewing area at the south end of the loch has very artistic rustic Scots pine wood railings and a lovely carved bench. The return trip down the other side of the valley was an easy amble on a hard forest road. A great walk.
