Bessie's Hill Walk

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)

About Bessie's Hill Walk

Like the hill fort at Castle O'er, Bessie's Hill fort sits prominently above the valley of Eskdale. In this location, anyone arriving would easily have seen the hill fort, while at same time being seen themselves.

Further up from the hill fort are the remains of another fortified settlement, where most of the tribe are likely to have lived.

This site is part of the Eskdale Prehistoric Trail.

How to get there:

Bessie's Hill Walk can be started from Bessie's Hill Car Park in Castle O'er Forest which is part of Forests of the Southern Uplands. Eskdalemuir, Lockerbie, and Langholm are the nearest towns or villages.

Reach Eskdalemuir on the B723 from Lockerbie, or the B709 from Langholm, then head south on the minor road to Castle O'er.

There are separate car parks at Bessie's Hill, Castle O'er and Kings Pool, with walks starting from each one.

The nearest train station is in Lockerbie.
